News & EventsBoerboel Australia Inc Appraisal Days 2011Link to Boerboel Australia Video - compiled by Pepijn Heuvelmans from Mojo Boerboels Overview on Appraisal days in Australia By Stoffel Bloem. First of all I would like to thank Boerboel Australia Inc for inviting me to their Appraisal days. It was a pleasure to be there. A special thank you to Craig and Sharon for making my stay memorable. Also thank you to Pepijn from the Netherlands for his assistance and for the book – Der Farmhund uas Sudafrika. It gave me a very good perspective on how Europeans see the Boerboel. Now let’s talk about the dogs we appraised. We appraised the dogs on the old HBSA system that was used around the year 2000. This system was refined by Lourens Minnaar which was a senior all-breed judge at KUSA at that time. In this system, temperament is extremely important and makes up 50% of the overall score. Any construction defect was judged very critically. With this system in that time about 18% of the dogs presented did not make the grade. Only ONE dog in over 30 dogs that was presented in Australia did not pass. He did well in the construction department but failed in temperament. On this system 70% is needed to pass. 75%-80% is seen as a good average dog, 80%+ is seen as above average and I would say 85%+ is seen as an excellent dog. In my opinion, the dogs presented that scored +-80% could compete against the best in the world at any time. The standard of the dogs presented in Australia is some of the highest I have seen in my career. These dogs are big and strong with exceptional head and bone. In the first National Boerboel show held in 2002 Zanta Boston won and I would say the average dog in Australia compares well with him in construction, size and temperament but with better movement. Boerboel breeders in Australia can be very proud of what they have accomplished. In the end, it means far more for the breed to get an honest score on a dog rather than a high score that means nothing. Rose colored glasses never did any breed any good. With regards to Spike, this is a cream colored dog, almost white. Most organizations would have disqualified him on his color. Personally I think this is a dog that has excellent features. Of all the dogs that I have seen, he excels in many areas. I think he will make a big contribution as a breeding dog. I must compliment the unity and co-operation within the Boerboel community in Australia. It was a great privilege for me to judge for Boerboel Australia Inc. The world must take note that these dogs are of the highest standard. I cannot wait for the stud photos to be published! Regards, Stoffel Bloem
